If you live in a city or a highly-populated suburban area, it’s highly likely that you receive mail from startups. It’s not the only company ramping up its holiday efforts: Target and Walmart recently announced free two-day shipping perks of their own, and both companies have also expanded their in-store toy sections, in an apparent bid to nab former Toys R Us customers, too.Īmazon’s move into mail is also a notable example of the cyclical nature of shopping. And the company is taking a particularly aggressive approach to the upcoming shopping blitz: Earlier this week, Amazon extended free shipping to all shoppers during the holiday season, with no minimum purchase. Sending out a toy catalog is no doubt Amazon’s bid to capture the customer base of the now-defunct Toys R Us. Amazon’s 2018 toy catalog, “A Holiday of Play.” Amazon Amazon also uses the advertisement, of course, to promote its Echo Dot Kids smart speaker. Some products are displayed with a QR code, so shoppers can use their Amazon app to drop the product right into their shopping cart, and to browse through recommendations of similar toys. The catalog features pages dedicated to popular toy brands like VTech, Lego, Little Tikes, and Hotwheels. In a statement to Vox, Amazon said that it’s “excited to offer a new way for customers to shop for toys this holiday season,” although it did not share exactly which customers it would be targeting by mail. The catalog is called “A Holiday of Play” and it’ll feature 70 pages of Amazon’s “favorite picks for every baby, kid, tween, and teen.” This is the first time Amazon has ever sent out a holiday shopping catalog, according to CNBC. The Seattle giant has just printed a holiday toy catalog, and will be mailing it out to millions of customers starting in November. Thus, the founders of these companies are now simultaneously being given excessive amounts of money to use within the company as they please, and being released from any oversight, by regulations and investors, on how they are running the company. They did so by implementing a more “founder friendly” model, which often gives founders special shares of the company that hold extra voting power, allowing the founders to retain at least some control of the company. With this new competition, VCs had to change their structure to entice founders to still work with them. This is in great contrast to the traditional source of funding for such companies, Venture Capital funds (VCs), who would essentially trade money for control of the company. These investors have come onto the scene with a lot of money and a lot less interest in controlling the companies they are investing in. In addition to these regulatory changes, there has been an influx of new kinds of investors looking to invest in private startup companies. ![]() With no one watching them and no threat of future scrutiny, it has become increasingly easy, and probably tempting, for these private companies to make morally, ethically, and sometimes legally, questionable business decisions to increase the company’s success. Thus, the pressures of an impending IPO have disappeared for many private companies, which has in turn removed the pressure to keep everything by the book for the inevitable future disclosures. These regulations have made it easier for companies to increase their capital while remaining private and have upped the thresholds that trigger mandatory reporting. In more recent years, regulations have changed and subsequently made it much easier for companies to stay private. Because they had an impending IPO looming over them, these companies usually acted by the book while they were still private to prevent issues from popping up when they had to disclose company information during the IPO. Most private companies knew they would eventually go public because of a need for more capital and/or because they would grow past a certain threshold which would trigger mandatory reporting. Initial Public Offerings (IPOs), which among other things bring companies into the public eye and help hold them accountable for their actions, were previously quite common. This is due to a noticeable shift in the lifecycle of startup companies. They were once a rather rare occurrence, as indicated by their name, but in recent years they have become increasingly common. The answer to these questions appears to be connected to the regulation (or lack thereof) of “Unicorns.” Unicorns are private companies with a valuation of over $1 billion. After news broke of the massive fraud, many wondered how and why it was able to happen. Centrifugal forces cause the polymer to be distributed evenly on the inside surface of the mold. Then the mold is rotated on multiple axes. The mold and polymer are heated to the point that the polymer is in a liquid state. In centrifugal casting (sometimes called rotational molding, centrifugal molding, or rotomolding), the molten polymeric material such as PEEK is placed into a mold and sealed. However, the precision is not as high as would be achieved with injection molding and it only works with parts that have a uniform cross-section. Production costs tend to be quite low, setup times are quick, and initial costs relatively low. Heated plastic is forced at high pressure through an open die. This is another commonly used manufacturing process for PEEK parts. Method 3: ExtrusionĮxtrusion is used to make polymer parts that have a constant cross-section, including tubes. Drawbacks are high tooling, the possibility of long lead times, and high costs. ![]() Benefits, from a production point of view, include a high production rate and low labor costs. Injection molding results in a part with a good surface finish and excellent dimensional accuracy. Injection molding is good for thin-walled parts and can produce complex parts with fine detail. Minimal post-processing is required, and usually takes the form of trimming of flash and excess plastic. After cooling and solidification the part (or parts) is removed from the die. In injection molding, molten plastic is injected (i.e., forced) at high pressure into a die. Injection molding is one of the most common processing methods for producing plastic parts, PEEK included. It cannot handle geometries with undercuts, however, and the processing time and part consistency are not as good as injection molding. Setup time is pretty quick, and the setup costs are relatively low. This process works very well for reinforced polymers and is a standard manufacturing method for making parts from PEEK.Ĭompression molding produces parts with a good surface finish. After the part has cooled, it is taken from the mold and flash is removed. The mold is closed under pressure and heated. In compression molding, a charge of plastic material is preheated and placed in a mold cavity. In this post, we are going to discuss four processing methods for manufacturing components from PEEK. One of the reasons it remains popular is its processability: PEEK is well adapted to a number of polymer processing techniques. PEEK has long been a highly regarded engineering polymer for an almost infinite variety of applications. ![]() ![]() Reputable comparison sites never sell your information to auto insurance companies and agencies. For example, here I have an image of Haworthia, Jade, and Aloe in pots on a window sill. I decided to have a bit of fun and build a classifier that detects multiple succulent plants in different scenes. As usual, the first thing I'll need to do is collect some training data. For example this image contains a dog, toy, grass, and park. It allows you to predict a set of objects, attributes, or labels for your images. ![]() That's where the new multi-label image classifier comes in. I can't really draw a bounding box to represent that the dog is in a park or outdoors. Now, this is great, but I'm also interested in the scene that the objects are in. For example, I've drawn a bounding box around the dog and another one around the ball. If you're interested in objects, then you can use the object detector to locate objects within a scene. For example, you might describe this image as dog or maybe outdoors. Before I get there, recall that single-label image classification is designed to predict the best label describing the contents of an image. Now that I've covered improvements in Create ML, I want to talk about the new multi-label image classifier. On top of general improvements, this can boost the accuracy of your classifier, lead to faster training time, and reduce the memory needed to store the extracted features. The new feature extractor has a smaller output embedding size when compared to our previous version. In the Create ML app, you'll notice a new feature extractor option in the model parameters section of the Settings tab. You can find out more by checking out our article on the machine learning research website. Image understanding models in the OS continue to evolve to give you the best possible experience. The latest version of the Apple Neural Scene Analyzer is now available to you for building state-of-the-art models with very little training data. The image classifier in Create ML is designed to help you build models to answer the question, what is the best label to describe the contents of my image? Similar to the text classifier, the image classifier leverages a pre-trained model to extract relevant information from images. Next, I want to talk about how we use transfer-learning in the image classification task. Make sure to watch "Explore Natural Language multilingual models" to find out more. We have a whole video that covers all of the details. You can leverage BERT on iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS Sonoma. On top of supporting multilingual text classifiers, BERT can also boost the accuracy of your monolingual text classifiers. The BERT embedding model is multilingual, which means your training data can now contain more than just one language. You can find the new option in the Create ML app in the model parameters section of the Settings tab. It's a bidirectional encoder representations from transformers model, or BERT for short. This year, we designed a new embedding model and trained it on billions of labeled text examples. You can choose the transfer-learning algorithm that uses a pre-trained embedding model as a feature extractor. In this example, I have sports, entertainment, and nature labels. To train such a model, all you need to do is provide it with a table of text and label pairs. A text classifier is a machine learning task designed to recognize patterns in natural language text. Let's get started with Text Classification improvements. And lastly, I'll talk about new Augmentation APIs that we designed to help you improve the quality of your model when you're limited on training data. Then I'll introduce a brand-new way of building machine learning models to understand scenes with multiple labels. I'll start by going through improvements that we've made to Create ML. Create ML gives you access to our latest technology so you can build your own custom machine learning experiences, without the hassle. We've gone through the process of creating state-of-the-art models that power many features, like the Search experience in the Photos app and Custom Sound Recognition in Accessibility. Our goal is to give you the tools to build great apps that use machine learning without all of the overhead. Training a large-scale model from scratch can take thousands of hours, millions of annotated files, and expert domain knowledge. I'm excited to take you on a tour of what's new.
